New convention on the protection of the environment through criminal law

On 3 and 4 April 2023, the Council of Europe’s Committee of experts on the protection of the environment through Criminal Law held its first meeting in Strasbourg.

Since 1977, the Council of Europe has recognised the “contribution of criminal law to the protection of the environment” and is now drafting a new global Convention on the Protection of the Environment through Criminal Law.

In his opening speech of the first meeting of the Committee on the Protection of the Environment through Criminal Law, Mr. Bjørn Berge, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, referred to “effective criminal law treaties that address cross-border issues”.
