The global arms trade is not only a matter of security and export controls. It is also embedded in wider systems of finance, investment, debt, and corporate activity that can contribute to, sustain, or profit from armed conflict. Through the lens of extraterritorial human rights obligations, this discussion will examine questions of responsibility and accountability for arms transfers, war financing, corporate involvement in conflict economies, and the gaps that persist in existing regulatory frameworks.
Featuring Dr. Attiya Waris, UN Independent Expert on Foreign Debt and Human Rights, and Dr. Shahd Hammouri, Lecturer in Law at the University of Kent, and Sam Jones, President & Co-Founder of Heartland Initiative, the webinar will consider how international law and human rights standards can help strengthen accountability and advance peace-oriented governance.
