China: Human Rights and Chinese Business Activities in Latin America

Civil society organisations have submitted a report to the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) on Chinese business activities in nine Latin American countries. In total, 14 cases were analysed in which these activities led to human rights violations and environmental damage. The report provides input to the CESCR on China’s non-compliance with its extraterritorial obligations in the context of the operation of companies and banks under its jurisdiction in Latin America.

This report has been prepared by the International Service for Human Rights (ISHR) and the Collective on Chinese Finance and Investment, Human Rights and the Environment (Colectivo sobre Financiamiento e Inversiones Chinas, Derechos Humanos y Ambiente – CICDHA). The current members of CICDHA are Amazon Watch, Alianza de Organizaciones por los Derechos Humanos, BRICS Policy Center, Centro de Documentación e Información Bolivia (CEDIB), CooperAcción, Fundación Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (FARN), Latinoamérica Sustentable (LAS), Observatorio Latinoamericano de Conflictos Ambientales (OLCA), Perú Equidad, Red Muqui, Sistema de Alerta Temprana and Sustentarse.
